Plan, Prepare, React: Active Shooter Response Options for Students, Faculty and Staff Class

An active shooter is defined as an armed person who has used deadly force on people and continues to do so while having unrestricted access to additional victims. Active shooter situations can occur anywhere, even on college and university campuses. A link to an Active Shooter video is provided below.

The “Plan, Prepare, React: Active Shooter Response Options for Students, Faculty and Staff” is a training program developed for the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia by the University of Georgia and by several other University System of Georgia institutions. The Plan, Prepare, React training program's intended audience is students, staff and faculty associated with the State of Georgia's 35 colleges and universities. This comprehensive training program includes a ten-minute video, a PowerPoint presentation, a training activity and resource materials.

Michael Moore – the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia responsible for the prosecution of all federal criminal cases in Georgia’s middle district which includes Athens. Mr. Moore is a member of the Terrorism and National Security Subcommittee of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee.

Dr. Dan Silk – Fulbright Scholar and Criminal Justice Instructor at UGA. His forthcoming book, Preventing Ideological Violence: Communities, Police and Case Studies of Success builds on his research concerning domestic anti-terrorism methods.

Individual preparedness is the responsibility of all faculty, staff and students on the UGA campus. Everyone should know how to prepare, respond to and recover from an emergency or disaster both at home and in the workplace. This class will help prepare members of the UGA community to respond to various building level emergencies and campus emergencies. Register.

Student Emergency Guidebooks

Student Emergency Guidebooks will be made available to incoming UGA Students during summer orientation.

The Student Emergency Guidebook is a quick reference guide that contains emergency numbers, popular UGA websites, Emergency Notification Methods, Fall and Spring Semester Calendars, Safe & Secure Resources, and Preventing Theft tips. This project is funded in part by a 2012 grant from the UGA Parents and Families Association.

UGA AED Program Guidelines

A Post Incident Report Form is to be completed after an AED incident then forwarded to the Office of Security and Emergency Preparedness.

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a small, portable device that analyzes the heart's rhythm for any abnormalities and, if necessary, directs the rescuer to deliver an electrical shock to the heart of someone suffering from sudden cardiac arrest. This shock, called defibrillation, may help the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

The objective of the UGA Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Program is to establish a campus-wide oversight committee and to develop appropriate guidelines to ensure consistency in purchasing, placement, training, maintenance and departmental oversight of AEDs on UGA properties. UGA Departmental Purchase of AED using UGAmart

NOTE: BEFORE ORDERING AN AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED), DEPARTMENTS NEED TO CONTACT PETE GOLDEN, Office of Security & Emergency Preparedness, at pgolden@uga.edu for instructions.

DEPARTMENTS USING UGAmart: BEFORE YOU LOG ON TO UGAmart: Choose either Package 1 or Package 2 and save the .pdf file to your computer, as you will need this file to upload later as an attacment when ordering in UGAmart. You will also need to save the Stat Pads Agreement and have it signed to be uploaded to UGAmart.

NOTE: During the ordering process in UGAmart, you will be prompted to upload your saved Package 1 or 2 file into the "External Line Attachment". (Attachement link in UGAmart can be found on the Summary-Draft Requisition screen.)

NOTE: During the ordering process in UGAmart, you will be prompted to upload a signed Stat Pads agreement into the "Internal Line Attachment". This agreement must be obtained prior to purchasing the AED in UGAmart. Contact Pete Golden or CINTAS for the form.

A web-based, online plan generator system: MyBEAP

The Office of Security and Emergency Preparedness has completed the final design and testing phase of an online plan generator that is now available to UGA Building Safety and Security Representatives (BSSRs) to create a building specific emergency plan that prepares the building occupants for possible emergency situations.

A special BSSR Brown Bag Lunch meeting, held on October 19, 2011, introduced the MyBEAP to the UGA Building Safety and Security Representatives. The program included a overview of the MyBEAP, how to access it and a question and answer session.

The MyBEAP link, now available to BSSRs, is an easy and user friendly way to generate a building specific Building Emergency Action Plan (BEAP). A valid UGA MyID and password is required to access the MyBEAP.

Along with work sessions, a web-based MyBEAP tutorial has been developed for BSSRs that will make creating a Building Emergency Action Plan (BEAP) easier and less time consuming.
